Last night I got out my Cabela’s Big Game Hunter for the Wii and started playing it. I started with some target practice. It starts you out with easier targets and they get harder and harder. You can shoot all kinds of geese and ducks and then it moves you to rabbits and deer before you start getting attacked by mountain lions and bear! It’s very addictive and fun!
Finally, once I had the controls down and was confident about my shooting abilities, I moved on to the hunts. Again… the first hunt is simple and walks you though all of the controls which it actually does a very nice job of. Each hunt consists of hunting for several animals. And then there are a dozen different hunts that get more and more difficult.
I’m don’t play video games very often. I’d rather spend my time doing something a bit more useful. But I will have to admit that Cabela’s Big Game Hunter is a surprisingly fun game and a bit addictive. If you like hunting you’re going to like this game. I had a great time playing it and highly recommend it.

Buying products in the off-season is a great way to save money. Products are seriously discounted so that they will move out to make room for products that are in-season.
Example: I just bought a 15′ 2-man ladder treestand that normally sells for at least $179 for only $49! Actually… it was such a great deal, I bought two of them. The first response from several people was that I would then have to buy harnesses for it and they could cost $99 each. Nope! It came with 2 harnesses! I’ve already put one together and it seems to be a pretty descent stand. After next hunting season, I’ll have to do an update on how I liked hunting in it and how it’s holding up.
Anyway… This is a great example of the deals you can get when you simply buy off-season. The dangerous part is…. now I’m excited to see what other great deals I can find now for next hunting season. Don’t tell my husband!

Skillet Game Hash
Prepare leftover meat from any big-game roast as a tasty hash.
Serves:4-6
1 quart water
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 pounds potatoes
1 tab butter
2 tabs vegetable oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 cups minced or ground cooked big game
1 cup leftover thin game gravy
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. dried basil leaves
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/8 tsp. dried thyme leaves
Dash nutmeg
Dash garlic powder

After having spent years in the hunting fields, rifle competitions, and training arenas, I have noted that a high number of missed “field” shots in these conditions were the result of unstable or flat out poor shooting positions. Now, in the areas of hunting, rifle competition, and training, your field shooting position will often be far from ideal. However, there are things you can do to raise your first round hit percentage by improving your shooting position.
1. Get your rifle as close to the ground as possible. The higher your body and your rifle are up in the air, the less stable you typically are. Not all field positions allow you to be right on the dirt, but be there whenever you can. Even if you do not use a bipod on your rifle, simply being prone and unsupported is a better position than sitting, kneeling, or leaning against a tree. The closer you and your rifle are to the dirt, the more stable you will be. Now, getting low may not always be possible, so be prepared for other unique field shooting positions, but try to stay low whenever possible.

When it comes to learning, games and interactive media are wonderful! Computers and the internet have made learning many new things fun rather than grueling. Hunting education and safety are now easier than ever as well as fun!
When hunting, we tend to get excited when we have an animal in our sights. But just because they’re in your sights doesn’t mean you should pull the trigger. When IS the correct time to pull the trigger? What is a good angle and what is a bad angle? If you pull the trigger, is the animal going to fall down dead because it was a good shot, or is it going to run away hurt?
The interactive game, Shoot or Don’t Shoot, is a good way to learn if you should shoot or not shoot a deer depending on the angle it is at or what is between you and the deer. Brought to you buy the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, this is a wonderful interactive learning exercise that is very educational and useable.
